Rainward received a distress message from an unbuilt ferry.
The message arrived during a routine berth inspection and included the ferry’s proposed hull number, an engine fault and a list of passengers. Asha Sen preserved the receiver before anyone could reset it. The passenger list included names selected for a community lottery that had not yet been drawn.
Independent clocks agreed on reception time. They did not agree that the event described must occur. The inspection team postponed the lottery, notified the listed people privately and released the technical record with personal details removed. The next message contained a different departure time.
