Mara grew up on the maintenance decks of Meridian, where her mother Neri Sen repaired valves and her father Olan Sen taught navigation. She learned that apparently technical decisions usually choose who gets to wait. As a delegate, she writes the likely losers of each proposal in the margin before discussing its benefits.
Her younger sister Asha Sen lives in Rainward. Mara has disclosed the relationship and stepped out of the compensation vote, but refuses to pretend that recusal makes the problem impersonal. A future distress call uses a phrase only their father used, and she has not yet let anyone hear that section.
