Government & Military
Assembly of Furrows
government
A republic whose irrigation districts send recallable representatives to Elmyard.
Seat
Elmyard
Leader
Mara Tern
Succession
Election every four years; district recall allowed
Representatives bring their own stools so an absent district is visible. Gate schedules and grain reserves are published on the same board as speeches. The Assembly’s weakness is not a lack of rules but unequal access to the time required to attend: ferrymen and mechanics can dominate a meeting farmers cannot leave their fields to join.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
governs Free State of Athelarden
Lantern Fleet
military
Aranestel’s combined escort and rescue fleet, divided over its own history.
Bases
Fallowerness; Leekowglen; Gableclay
Doctrine
Convoy escort and distress response
Commander
Ilyra Sere
Fast cutters carry signals between heavier grain escorts. Captains are judged by ships delivered, encouraging conservative routes but also tempting officers to exclude difficult passengers from the count. Publishing the lost passenger lists would change whose failures the fleet is required to remember.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
commanded by Ilyra Sere
League of Lanterns
government
A coastal confederacy governed by obligations to supply and rescue distant harbors.
Seat
Fallowerness
Leader
Ilyra Sere
Succession
Harbor delegates elect the convener
Each member harbor owes vessels, trained keepers and stores according to its means. A harbor can refuse an offensive war but cannot lawfully refuse a rescue call. The darkened towers exposed how easily command language can conceal that distinction. Reformers propose logs kept independently ashore and aboard every rescue vessel.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
governs Aranestel
Marchwarden of Umarwald
office
An office renewed by rescue captains after seven winters, held by Anja Rusk.
Term
Seven winters
Holder
Anja Rusk
Authority
Winter shelter, road safety and supply requisitions
The marchwarden may requisition a heated building during mortal cold but remains answerable for unnecessary losses. The law was written to prevent private owners abandoning strangers. Creditors now use the same accountability clause to threaten Anja personally for a rescue that saved hundreds.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
held by Anja Rusk
Passwardens
military
Brynvale’s road crews and garrisons, inseparable because a frozen road defeats both.
Base
The Cinder Fortress
Doctrine
Shelter, controlled passes, maintained warmth
Commander
Oren Halvek
Engineers hold rank alongside soldiers. A road foreman can close a route over a captain’s objection when the warmth circuit fails. Payment in warehouse tokens keeps provisions moving but lets the warden control prices. Independent kitchens are therefore treated as a challenge to discipline rather than an act of relief.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
commanded by Oren Halvek
The Snowline Companies
military
Northern rescue troops trained to keep roads open before fighting over them.
Doctrine
Supply before pursuit
Commander
Torren Rusk
Recruitment
Shelter service and local muster
Every company carries sledges, saws and grain before spare weapons. Captains may abandon a pursuit to recover civilians without permission. Torren wants to seize the measuring stations; his best officers warn that an occupied station requires the same skilled workers whose loyalties he doubts.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
commanded by Torren Rusk
Bestiary
Glassback Stag
creature
A shy northern grazer whose translucent antler tips reveal seasonal mineral deposits.
Diet
Lichen and submerged water plants
Status
Protected by lake fishers
Habitat
Umarwald’s lake margins
Behavior
Moves before visible thaw; rarely approaches settlements
The antler tips gather minerals from winter feeding and appear to glow when low sun passes through them. Fishers follow the herd to find safe ice, but the animals seek food rather than human safety. Songs confuse the stag with a shape beneath Lake Aranea; naturalists have not established that the two are related.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
inhabits Lake Aranea
Reedwake Otter
creature
A coastal tool-using animal that opens shellfish on stones cached in reed beds.
Diet
Shellfish and small crabs
Status
Common where marshes survive
Habitat
Kelpie Sleeve; Sound of Yalea
Behavior
Uses repeated tapping patterns
Pilots distinguish otter tapping from human calls by its irregular pauses, a skill newcomers learn through embarrassing mistakes. The animals carry favorite stones between territories, making old shell-strewn banks unreliable signs of an occupied den. Draining the marshes would remove both their habitat and a natural buffer against surge.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.

Powers & Beliefs
Hearthbinding
magic system
A measurable craft that moves existing heat through prepared vessels and living roots.
Rarity
Common small-work craft, rare network expertise
Limitations
Cannot create heat; cannot erase memories carried by Rootspeech in the same living channels; cannot cancel a Starward Covenant; a broken circuit stops transfer; prolonged cold requires recalibration
Hard or soft
Hard; measurable transfer with uncertain historical infrastructure
Scope & scale
A room or city through connected channels; realm-sized networks require fixed chambers
Source of power
Existing heat in bodies, fires, water and rooted wood
Society’s view
Necessary public service, distrusted monopoly
Who can wield it
Trained binders using calibrated garnets
How it is accessed
Close a conductive circuit with a matched pair of garnets and a living cedar root
Cost to the wielder
Body heat, fatigue and permanent heart damage after repeated overdraw
Known practitioners
Hedra Halvek; Ossa Sere; Mira Pell
A transfer, never a gift
A binder can warm a sickroom by cooling a cistern, but cannot make both warm at once. Matched garnets measure the change while a prepared root carries it. Household circuits are short, visible and usually safe. The old realm-spanning network disappears into foundations nobody can inspect.
The human reserve
When a source runs out, a careless binder becomes the nearest available source. Early symptoms resemble ordinary exhaustion; repeated overdraw damages the heart. The Sisters of the Unspent Hour insist this is injury, not a noble spiritual price.
The present dispute
The stones used in the original treaty undercount prolonged cold. Mira Pell is repeating their calibration in public. A correct new standard might prove that the northern march supplied more than it agreed to, but a standard alone cannot return a lost harvest. The warm jar from The Aranea Sounding appears to keep giving heat without cooling anything nearby. Good binders treat that as a reason to look harder, not permission to declare free energy.

Rootspeech
magic system

Source of power
Impressions retained by living plants and shared root systems
Society’s view
Respected by mourners, contested in courts

How it is accessed

Cost to the wielder
Temporary loss of a personal memory; deep listening can permanently exchange memories
Known practitioners
Iven Morn; Sereva Morn
Listening without ventriloquism
A tree remembers pressure, light, injury and repeated movement. A listener supplies language, introducing interpretation at the very moment a witness seems to speak. The best practitioners report uncertainty alongside the remembered scene.
A place in memory
To receive an impression, the listener temporarily yields one of their own. Familiar names usually return after sleep. Deep workings may exchange memories permanently, leaving someone certain of an event they never lived. Consent matters on both sides: a cut root cannot refuse a question, but its answers lose the surrounding context.
The testimony nobody can own
The cedar at The Thorn Fortress remembers a child brought to the first chamber. Some hear a victim; others hear a volunteer. Iven Morn refuses both conclusions until the impression can be heard without court prompting. Avel Morn has heard her own childhood words in the same root, suggesting the network can transport memory as well as warmth.

Starward Covenant
magic system
Rare long-distance workings that bind a promise to a star’s return and consume the speaker’s remaining years.
Rarity
Very rare, fewer than one witnessed covenant per generation
Limitations
Cannot compel another will, revive the dead or change a past event; cloud and misidentified stars interrupt initiation
Hard or soft
Soft; consequences are consistent but fulfillment takes indirect forms
Scope & scale
Across a kingdom or the world between named endpoints, independent of distance
Source of power
A witnessed promise fixed to a recurring stellar alignment
Society’s view
Revered in songs, feared in law
Who can wield it
A willing speaker, a named beneficiary and three independent witnesses
How it is accessed
Speak the same exact promise under the appointed star at both endpoints
Cost to the wielder
Permanent loss of years of life; breaking the promise consumes the remaining pledged years at once
Known practitioners
Historical starward witnesses; no living practitioner publicly claims mastery
A promise with an address
Unlike Hearthbinding, a covenant does not carry a substance along a route. It binds two places through a promise and waits for an opportunity to fulfill it. A speaker might vow that a lost traveler will find a light, but cannot dictate whose house lights the lamp or who pays for the oil.
The years promised
A working consumes future years, not immediate vigor. Nobody can measure the loss safely before it is due. Courts therefore forbid using a child as speaker, even with parental permission. The earliest treaty predates that prohibition.
A dangerous explanation
Some priests believe the first summer was secured by a covenant disguised as engineering. This would explain why a chamber can appear to produce heat without a visible source: the source could be a future that has not arrived. The theory remains disputed. It must not be used to excuse failures that ordinary inspection can already explain.

The Child Who Lent the Sun
myth
A disputed story about the first summer, told as sacrifice, theft or warning.
Origin
Conflicting northern and court traditions
Status
No agreed historical identification
Figures
An unnamed child; eight witnesses; a gardener
Court versions praise a willing child who promised the sun would remain until the last seed ripened. Northern versions describe adults changing the name of the seed so the promise could never end. Grove listeners refuse both as literal testimony. The story matters because it teaches children either obedience to a necessary cost or suspicion of adults who name the cost for them.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.

Communal meals; an empty stool for the absent; no payment for first shelter
The faith does not forbid accounting. It forbids presenting a rescue as a favor whose debt can never be discharged. This distinction places its clergy between cooperative treasurers and people who mistake unpaid maintenance for free warmth. At Bluebellbarrow, the empty stool is reserved for the landlord’s daughter whose name appears among the strikers.

Humans of Veyrath
species
The diverse human communities whose choices, rather than species destiny, shaped the borrowed summer.
Range
All eight realms
Lifespan
Usually 65–90 years with large local differences
Variation
Language, livelihood and household tradition
No ancestry grants immunity to cold, magical cost or bad judgment. Political divisions cross households and professions; refugees frequently share customs with people across a border more readily than with their own rulers. This setting treats supernatural events as pressures on human choices, not explanations that erase them.
Its role in the current crisis connects ordinary work to the larger dispute over who benefits, who pays and who is allowed to describe what happened.
Pilot Cant
language
A working vocabulary of calls, taps and visible signals used across political borders.
Origin
Multiple coastal communities
Script
Knots, painted boards and gesture diagrams
Speakers
Pilots and rescue crews
Meaning depends on the material struck as well as the number of taps. A warning repeated on wood and stone is not the same warning. The Nettlepond school is documenting the cant so newcomers can learn it safely, while older pilots fear fixed instructions will imply the water itself stops changing.

The Door-Menders
culture
A northern practice of making hospitality visible through shared repair.
Food
Smoked fish, rye cakes and preserved roots
Customs
A repaired public latch marks adulthood
Heartland
High March of Umarwald
Young people earn a household key by repairing a shelter used by strangers. The custom predates the Rusks and cannot be granted by a ruler. Southern visitors sometimes buy ornate latches as souvenirs, misunderstanding that an object becomes meaningful through the door it keeps open.

The River Stools
culture
The southern habit of carrying one’s place into a public assembly.
Food

Customs
A portable stool identifies a district, not a rank
Heartland
Free State of Athelarden
The practice began when striking workers met outside locked halls. Stools vary in height because they were made for ferries, mills and kitchens. Preserving those differences signals equal standing without pretending equal lives. New citizens increasingly bring folding benches for people unable to sit alone.

Limitation
Prolonged cold changes the response
Two stones are calibrated together so ordinary variation can be compared rather than ignored. The oldest treaty sets were tested at workshop temperatures, not northern winter conditions. Replacing them requires more than better instruments: users must be able to reproduce the test and contest the owner’s interpretation.

The jar came from a warm seep during the Northern Survey. It has neither cooled visibly nor heated its surroundings as much as a steady source should. The rod broke during the northern delegates’ final argument over the treaty measures. Southern accounts call the break a tantrum; Ragna Rusk’s supply ledgers suggest the delegate demonstrated a cold-fracture defect. Its two halves do not fit without a small gap. Whether a piece was lost or the metal changed remains disputed.

The green name
Alceria's surviving lowland woods cluster around The Tangleholt and the sheltered approaches to Oakdell. Much of the wider realm is tundra or ice. Official maps still paint it green, invoking the orchards that stood before the first great transfer. Regent Tavia Morn no longer permits those maps in schools.
River Cedarflow connects the central valleys to the contested warmth machinery. The court cannot simply stop the flow: doing so would flood settlements downstream and freeze its own nurseries. The Thorn Fortress protects the oldest chamber, wrapped in roots that have grown around its doors.
The root's testimony
Alcerian Rootspeech practitioners can recover impressions held in living timber. A cedar at the fortress remembers soldiers carrying a child into the chamber on the night the official histories call voluntary sacrifice. Tavia wants the memory heard. Her treasury survives on the treaty that memory could destroy.

Aranestel's shape is its constitution. Towns too far apart for a single garrison communicate by beacon and river boat. Leekowglen sends amber and cold-water fish south; Gableclay sends kilnware north; the capital Fallowerness arbitrates salvage. The convenership belongs to the officer who can keep those routes open, presently Ilyra Sere.
A lantern withheld
Every harbor owes shelter to a lit rescue vessel. During the Night Without Lanterns, several lights were deliberately darkened to prevent refugee ships claiming that shelter. Ilyra's father signed the order and her daughter found it. The confederacy now asks foreign realms to trust a new network of heat signals. Its own pilots still count the unlit towers when they pass.

Above the thaw
Despite its pastoral name, Brynvale is a country of ridges, tundra and permanent ice. The name survives from a warmer century. Its one true city, Pinewood, occupies the southern foothills where pack animals can winter. Beyond it, every sheltered ledge has a number and every missing caravan has witnesses.
The The Frost Skyline divides meltwater traveling toward rival basins. Warden Oren Halvek controls the passes rather than the mountains themselves. His family tends the old transfer chambers beneath The Cinder Fortress, charging a toll for roads warmed by the same machinery that starves neighboring slopes of snowmelt.
An unstable inheritance
Oren's son has found a road under the glacier that predates the engines. If it can reopen, Brynvale loses its tolls but may finally stop burning imported cedar merely to remain habitable.

The living rent
The western forests catch the mild sea wind before it reaches the frozen interior. Gaurheim can harvest timber without borrowing summer, a privilege its monarchs once called proof of divine favor. In 661, Queen Ysabet Vey opened the crown's warmwood groves to refugees and discovered that the exported living roots also carried away heat. The compact now sells warmth as if it were timber.
A crown under the bark
Lichencourt collects duties; Cedarterrace builds the vessels; Ochererbourne keeps the warning lamps. Their three guilds may refuse a royal levy together. Ysabet's heir wants to cancel the export contracts before the last old trees die. The shipwrights ask who will feed their children if the contracts end. The queen has begun visiting the groves without her ceremonial axe.

The wooded southern peninsula has more dependable soil than the central highlands. Athelarden's orchard terraces and barley strips support hungry markets far beyond its small borders. The country became free when farm cooperatives refused to supply the old grain barons during the Breadless Siege. Its elected First Speaker, Mara Tern, is descended from the barons' ferrymen, not their victims alone.
Whose summer?
Warmth arriving through River Mistlereach is treated as common property. Irrigation turns it into political power: an upstream gate opened an hour too long can ruin a downstream orchard. Elmyard keeps gate schedules in public; Bluebellbarrow keeps the graves of those who tried to make the schedules fair. The Assembly has discovered its soil now needs more borrowed heat each year. Admitting that would give the exiled landlords their best argument for returning.

The country that remained cold
Umarwald stretches across the northern drainage, from the firth at Norrun to the ice fisheries of Lake Aranea. Its dispersed settlements share smokehouses, winter roads and rescue obligations. No household may close its door against a traveler during whiteout, even an enemy wearing a foreign crest.
The first Concord of Eight Hearths promised the march an equal share of the reclaimed growing season. The promise was never fulfilled. Marchwarden Anja Rusk keeps the broken bronze measuring rod on the council table, not in a shrine.
A practical rebellion
The march can stop timber moving down Hornbeambeck River, but doing so would starve its own boatmen before the southern courts. Anja therefore proposes a grain tithe paid before spring thaw. Her brother would rather dismantle the buried engines. Beneath Foxgloveton, the ice has started to sound like running water.

Between two shores
Small Qirarden occupies the southeastern peninsula between the farm country and the strait. Highby sits above a river bend, while Nettlepond works the exposed southern shore. Their pilots guide grain ships through Sound of Yalea into Valarea Strait. A fleet can conquer the piers and still founder without a local pilot.
Tidekeeper Neris Damar must host any captain who surrenders a weapon at the harbor gate. That law protects exiles, spies and debtors as readily as merchants. Aranestel calls it a haven for wreckers; the recovered passenger lists suggest the accusation is convenient.
The price of an open door
Qirarden has accepted people made homeless by both winter and artificial thaw. Neris's niece wants them represented on the keel council. Established pilots fear losing the only vote that prevents foreign nobles from owning the harbor.

A small country with a large standard
Relevar occupies the narrow inland meeting of three powers. Its capital Garnetrun cuts garnets for measuring heat; the stones darken by repeatable amounts when a working is charged. Local courts insist that a king's warmth and a laborer's warmth register identically. That assertion has prevented annexation more effectively than the principality's walls.
The counterfeit spring
Prince Cael Orven inherited a workshop throne and an embarrassing discovery: his grandfather certified a batch of flawed measures used in the Concord of Eight Hearths. The old stones undercount the heat taken from the north. Replacing them would bankrupt buyers who acted in good faith as well as the original thieves. The prince has invited an independent lampwright to repeat the experiments in public. Someone has already bought every suitable lamp in the city.

The barrow lies between the orchards and the shore above Cove of Otha. Bluebells flower on it before surrounding fields thaw, a consequence of buried heat conduits rather than a miracle. The republic's founders nevertheless chose it as the burial place for the hunger strikers.
Lysa Tern teaches school in the old granary and asks pupils to count the names on the memorial. There are more names than coffins. An exiled landlord's daughter appears among the honored dead even though the family insists she escaped. Her missing testimony could explain who first opened the grain stores.

Each slipway climbs the coastal slope so a hull can be worked above winter surge. Shipwrights sing the cutting dates aloud while sealing the planks, preserving a chain of responsibility older than written contracts.
Bram Vey wants to restart a mothballed yard using reclaimed timber. The first salvaged keel has put out leaves. Its original grove was officially felled fifty years ago, suggesting the vanished woodland was moved rather than destroyed.

Celadon Channel
sea
A sheltered western passage where nursery boats and grain barges exchange cargo.
Green-grey water separates the western approaches of Alceria from the open The Riven Run. Kirkengrove ferries work the lee shore, carrying seedlings in wet cloth and returning with sacks of barley. During spring surge, pilots follow the color of suspended clay rather than the apparent shoreline.
House Oss keeps a rescue shed on each navigable reach. A southern grain barge recently arrived with cedar pollen frozen inside its bilge, evidence that a shipment had traveled through cold country despite papers claiming a direct coastal route. The cargo is sound; the route is what someone wished to conceal.
Cove of Otha
sea
A sheltered recess beneath the southern farm country, used by smugglers and rescue crews alike.
The cove cuts into the western side of the southern peninsula below the routes to Elmyard. Orchard farmers once hid untaxed grain in its caves; during the Breadless Siege the same caves held food for strikers. A carved sheaf above an entrance still means shelter is owed.
House Oss refuses to distinguish a smuggler's drowning from a tax collector's. Their boats have begun recovering empty heat jars tied together as floats. The jars were made in Gableclay, far around the peninsula, suggesting a trade route operating outside both coast guards.

The tower sent white for six nights during the Night Without Lanterns. The official register records red. Ruel Sere recovered the charred mirror-cloth used to filter the light, which contains no red dye. He must carry it to Fallowerness before sea damp erases the evidence.

Firth of Perou
sea
Norrun’s narrow shelter, where river ice and sea surge negotiate every spring.
The firth reaches toward Norrun through the northern coast. In cold years its surface carries sledges; in warmer ones the incoming swell breaks the ice without clearing it. Harbor families keep both runners and oars ready by the same door.
The Norrun Ice Truce was signed on a grounded boat here after armies on opposite banks found their common crossing had failed. The boat remains a meeting house above the quay. Its timbers have begun moving against their fastenings whenever the Hornbeambeck River warms, as if trying to return to a forest that still recognizes them.

Vessa Rusk records annual ice thickness in cuts along the chapel stair. This year's melt exposed an older stair beneath it, with cuts continuing below the foundations. The marks suggest the lake has thawed on a schedule, not in response to weather. Villagers disagree whether to notify the marchwarden or hide the discovery from southern engineers.

Glassfish Margin
sea
A far-western cold-water edge famous for translucent fish and the arrival of strangers.
Shoals of translucent glassfish make the shallow water look empty until the sun strikes it. Fishers use dark-bottomed boats to see their catch, a practical tradition southern writers mistook for mourning. The margin lies above the exposed approaches to Ochererbourne.
During the Glassfish Arrival, boats carrying displaced northern households came ashore with no shared language. Food was exchanged using drawn fish and open hands. Siv Vey has preserved those first pictographs. Some show a coastal city absent from every surviving map, with a road descending beneath its harbor.

Hornbeambeck River
region
Umarwald’s timber route and the northern measure of an unequal bargain.
The river threads the northern interior before the sheltered approaches to Norrun. Timber crews mark the first floating log of each spring with the name of someone lost over winter. At the Norrun Ice Truce, boats from rival banks carried the same name, forcing both courts to recognize shared losses.
Anja Rusk can close the timber booms but not reverse the current. A premature thaw would sweep those booms toward the firth before the ice roads are safe. The Snowline Companies now guard measuring stations against saboteurs who need only warm a single bend to make an army's supply plan worthless.
Kelpie Sleeve
sea
A western coastal reach whose shifting weed banks make reliable charts short-lived.
The sleeve curls below Gaurheim's forest shore. Rafts of dark weed conceal rocks and provide nesting grounds for the Reedwake Otter. Sailors call the weed a kelpie's mane, though no reliable account describes the supposed animal itself.
Shipwrights from Cedarterrace tow unfinished hulls here to test their pitch. A recent hull returned covered in living rootlets despite having no root-bearing timber in its manifest. The yard can admit a supplier cheated or claim the sea itself can teach dead cedar to grow. Either explanation threatens contracts that support the town.

Kirkengrove stands near the sheltered reach of Celadon Channel. Its small harbor sends seedlings west and receives grain from the southern peninsula. The churchyard is a grove: each tree is named for a household lost inland, and its fruit belongs to anyone who knew them.
Iven Morn has heard a tree speaking with the voice of a living woman. Her family in Oakdell believes her dead. The grove's custodians oppose cutting a sample for proof, because even a truthful investigation could kill the only witness. Boatman Jalen Oss has offered to carry a rootspeaker there without collecting a fare.

Lake Aranea
lake
A northern freshwater archive whose layers of ice record missing seasons.
The lake holds water in blue layers thick enough to reveal the shape of past winters. Foxgloveton fishers cut narrow windows rather than broad holes, preserving the records for Vessa Rusk. Some bands contain pollen from trees that cannot grow here.
After the Aranea Sounding, the fishers found warm water entering from below. It carries no silt and tastes faintly of cedar. The march could drain the lake to expose the source, but doing so would destroy its fisheries and send an unpredictable flood downstream. A breathing shape moves beneath the oldest clear ice; the Glassback Stag legend may have borrowed its antlers from something aquatic.

Nettlepond's namesake pools lie behind the exposed southern shore at Sound of Yalea. Reed beds move after storms, making last year's chart a dangerous comfort. Pilots train by guiding blindfolded partners along safe banks using calls and the sound of tapping poles.
Ari Damar has opened the training to refugees, breaking the hereditary monopoly of three pilot clans. House Oss supports the school with boats but refuses a permanent seat on its board. The first graduating class has found a deep-water channel that would bypass Highby's tolls, testing the tidekeeper's commitment to open passage.

Population

Norrun faces the Firth of Perou at the western end of the march. Its streets climb in shallow steps so loaded sledges can reach the warehouses without unloading. Dock bells sound for arrivals in summer and for missing patrols in winter; residents can tell the difference from a single stroke.
Anja Rusk requisitioned the merchants' warm storehouses during the Norrun Ice Truce. The owners still seek payment, while the families sheltered there insist a rescue cannot become a debt. A drowned bell has begun ringing beneath the dock whenever a grain convoy leaves the south.

Oakdell
city

Exports

Founded
Before the Concord
Population
31,000
Oakdell lies at the edge of The Tangleholt, where a fold in the terrain keeps the wind off the nursery terraces. Houses share glass-roofed courtyards instead of private gardens. The nursery register lists each seedling beside the village that has promised to plant it when the interior warms again.
Regent Tavia Morn recently removed seventy-three vanished villages from the tax rolls but left them on the nursery register. A grove has started sprouting leaves shaped like those of a tree thought extinct since The First Borrowing. Rootspeakers disagree whether it is remembering the past or asking for a future.

The houses face inland and the warning boards face the sea. Local ochre remains visible against sleet when polished signal glass fails. Apprentices learn to paint a wreck notice before they learn their own crest.
After the Glassfish Arrival, residents adopted a fleet of abandoned refugee boats as public shelters. Royal customs now proposes selling them to recover unpaid duties. Siv Vey is quietly tracing their passengers, while a boat marked empty continues to receive fresh flowers at the changing of each tide.

Ochre Mercers’ Hall
landmark
Garnetrun’s cloth exchange, where treaty measures became public evidence against the houses that kept them.
City
Garnetrun
Type
guildhall
Condition
Working exchange; the north arcade is reserved for the compensation hearings.
River damp has stained the hall’s lower stones the color of old mustard. Cloth arrives by shallow barge, is hung in the courtyard until its weight settles, and only then may be measured for sale. A merchant who weighs wet cloth is barred from the exchange for a season; the empty hook beside the eastern door records the most recent offender.
House Pell maintains the paired entrance towers, but the keys belong to two elected porters rather than to Mira’s family. Each morning one porter brings a reference rod from the dry tower while the other brings its river-cooled twin. Their disagreement used to be treated as a small, predictable inconvenience. In the year 684, the rods began disagreeing even after a day together on the same table.
During the Breaking of the Measures, the mercers opened the courtyard to people whose compensation claims had been dismissed as bad accounting. A seamstress laid three unpaid winter allotments along a bolt of undyed linen. The line reached past the witnesses’ bench. That length, rather than a speech by any ruler, became Garnetrun’s remembered measure of the scandal. The linen still hangs above the north arcade, with space left for claims not yet heard.

Pinewood
city
Brynvale’s foothill city, where roads, pack trains and seasons are repaired.
Exports
Pack saddles, dried mushrooms, pass guides and furnace stone
Founded
Before the Concord
Population
9,800
The pines that gave Pinewood its name survive only on the protected southern slope. Mule yards occupy more ground than houses, and the market measures distance in nights of shelter rather than miles. Caravan contracts include a place for an animal's name and a clause forbidding its abandonment.
Oren Halvek pays the road crews with pass tokens that can only be spent in his own warehouses. Sella Halvek has begun redeeming those tokens in food at an independent kitchen. Her nephew Tarin Halvek returned from the ice with a piece of ancient paving, offering a way around both the toll and the mountain.
A central river carrying nursery trade, diverted warmth and incompatible histories.
The Cedarflow runs through the cold central basin beneath the approaches to The Thorn Fortress. Living root rafts move along it from the sheltered woods. Their crews lash the roots above water unless a measured release of warmth has been contracted downstream.
The Cedarflow Reversal was not a reversal of water but of heat: workers felt frost form on the downstream ropes while upstream snow melted. Court diagrams omitted the distinction, and schoolchildren still argue that the river once ran backward. Mira Pell needs samples from both banks to determine whether the old measuring stones recorded the event honestly.
contains The Cedarflow Reversal
River Fennelwater
region
The eastern drainage whose herb scent warns boatmen of a dangerous thaw.
Wild fennel grows on the warmer lower banks, releasing its scent when rising water tears the roots. Pilots take the smell as a warning to moor above the ordinary flood line. The river connects remote eastern holdings that cannot afford to wait for a sea convoy.
During the Fennelwater Flood, signal stations relayed water height but omitted the speed of the rise. Ilyra Sere now demands both measurements. An upstream station has begun transmitting a perfectly steady height while its banks visibly collapse, suggesting someone is replacing observation with a desired result.
contains The Fennelwater Flood
River Mistlereach
region
The southern river whose irrigation gates decide who receives summer.
The Mistlereach crosses the narrow southern country toward Highby. Mistle roots cling to old gate stones, surviving even when farmers strip them bare. Channels branch toward Athelarden's fields, placing the republic's food supply upstream of Qirarden's mills and crossings.
The Gatekeepers Strike established shared inspections after one gate was held open to warm a landlord's orchard through frost. Today the same gate opens by itself for eleven minutes each evening. Mara Tern suspects a mechanical fault; Neris Damar has ordered the downstream town evacuated during the next full thaw, a precaution that sounds like an accusation.
contains The Gatekeepers Strike
Rose Citadel
landmark
A mountain fortress whose red stone conceals a hospice rather than an army.
Rose-colored seams stripe the cliffs beside The Frost Skyline. The citadel was built to inspect packs crossing the eastern passes, then converted after the Rose Mercy when its garrison admitted wounded soldiers from both sides. Its kitchens still maintain separate pots for travelers unable to share salt.
The Sisters of the Unspent Hour shelter exhausted heat-workers here. Sella Halvek sends food, while Aranestel claims inspection rights because the eastern path descends into its territory. One patient remembers the first engine running before the treaty that supposedly authorized its construction.
contains Sisters of the Unspent Hour · contains The Rose Mercy
Salt Tower
landmark
A solitary eastern storehouse where the sea’s approach is measured on the walls.
The tower stands inland of the southeastern shore. Salt blooms in its mortar at a height no living tide reaches. Engineers call it a relic of an older coast; priests say it is a record of promises dissolved by water.
The Salt Tower Vigil began when ceramic heat jars burst in the storehouse without warming the room. Ossa Sere found that the warmth had moved into the tower's foundation instead. A staircase below the sealed cellar grows drier with each shipment. Opening it may reveal a harbor older than the present coastline.
contains The Salt Tower Vigil
Sound of Yalea
sea
A shallow southern sound where pilotage is a public trust contested by hereditary families.
The sound lies beyond Nettlepond, threaded with reed shoals that move after storms. Its deeper channels connect westbound grain traffic with Valarea Strait. A pole tapping twice against stone means turn; tapping twice against wood means stop. Outsiders who learn the calls but not the sound can wreck within sight of the village.
The Open Keel Vote allowed displaced sailors to train as pilots. Established clans claim the new school teaches incomplete charts. Ari Damar proposes a joint survey with each boat carrying an elder and a refugee, making mutual dependence part of the lesson.
The Cinder Fortress
landmark
A border furnace guarding Brynvale’s most profitable road and its most dangerous secret.
The fortress occupies the southeastern approaches to Brynvale, where highland roads meet the routes toward Pinewood and Fallowerness. Its black walls come from furnace slag, poured in the years when heat was believed inexhaustible. Water channels run under the gate to prevent the road from freezing.
Oren Halvek calls the buried workings a public utility. Tarin Halvek has found maintenance marks proving that one chamber is still drawing from a source absent from every ledger. The Cinder Breach exposed a child's shoe fused into the oldest layer of slag. No one has agreed who should be allowed to name the child.
contains The Cinder Breach
The Frost Skyline
region
An eastern wall of ridges with a road older than the ice above it.
The skyline catches wet eastern weather and keeps the interior cold. A clear afternoon reveals peaks that seem close enough to reach before sunset; generations of rescue crews have buried travelers who believed that illusion. Only three maintained passes cross the barrier.
Tarin Halvek found a fourth road beneath the glacier during the Buried Road Discovery. Its paving uses the same shell-bearing stone as the foundations beneath Highby, although no quarry of that stone is known. Following it might join histories now separated by both mountains and political convenience.
contains The Buried Road Discovery
The Riven Run
sea
The broad western sea whose mild currents support the forests that finance borrowed summer.
The Run occupies the open western and southwestern waters. Its surface current brings milder air to Gaurheim while winter storms batter the exposed routes to the southern peninsula. Ocean captains follow a circuit rather than the shortest line, waiting for a wind that will let a grain ship reach the lee coast intact.
House Oss keeps lists of vessels overdue rather than presumed dead. One list now contains a ship that returned twice, with two crews claiming the same departure. Neither crew is lying about the stars it followed. The family has sheltered both while seeking a less profitable explanation than a miracle.
The Tangleholt
region
A sheltered forest preserving impressions of villages erased from the tax rolls.
The wood grows in the lee of the central ridges around Oakdell. Fallen trunks remain in place because a cut cross-section can destroy years of impressions before a rootspeaker hears them. This practice makes the forest slow to traverse and difficult to patrol.
The Rooted Witness maintains paths named for the dead villages whose seedlings still grow in the capital. At the Tangleholt Hearing, a tree contradicted the official account of the first transfer. It also misremembered the color of the soldiers' coats. The custodians teach that a living witness deserves protection without being mistaken for an infallible record.
contains The Tangleholt Hearing
The Thorn Fortress
landmark
A root-bound chamber at the heart of Alceria’s disputed history.
The fortress sits above the central river routes, its doors lifted off their hinges by living roots. Builders laid its foundations around a cedar rather than removing it, believing the tree would stabilize the first great transfer. The cedar is now larger than the keep.
During the Thorn Testimony, rootspeakers heard a child asking to go home. The treaty describes willing adult volunteers. Regent Tavia Morn has barred cutting and invited witnesses from all eight realms. A cut root recently spoke the same words with her own childhood voice, raising the possibility that memory can be moved as well as warmth.

Valarea Strait
sea
The southeastern shipping threshold on which small Qirarden can confront larger fleets.
The strait connects the southern sound with the long eastern coast. Its deep water tempts foreign captains to bypass local pilots, but cross-currents near the headlands can turn a loaded ship broadside. Neris Damar keeps rescue craft stationed where toll collectors once waited.
After the Strait of Empty Berths, Qirarden offered sanctuary to crews fleeing unpaid service in the Lantern Fleet. Aranestel demands their return as deserters. The crews carry charts marking lights that were deliberately extinguished during the refugee disaster, turning a dispute about wages into one about testimony.

Wandering Narrows
sea
A far-northern channel whose seasonal shore makes borders impossible to draw honestly.
The narrows lie beyond Lake Aranea near the northern limit of settled observation. Ice shelves move the usable passage each season, leaving boundary stones alternately inland and underwater. Umarwald's surveyors mark safe routes in removable poles rather than carving permanent claims.
During the Northern Survey, Vessa Rusk found a warm seep beneath a boundary marker and sealed the sample in a common kitchen jar. It stayed warm through an entire winter. The jar is now in Garnetrun, where its maker's mark is being compared with objects recovered from the oldest buried chambers.

Qirarden offered sanctuary to sailors whose vessels disappeared from Aranestel’s rescue records.
Location
Valarea Strait
Participants
Qalen Damar, Bast Oss, Una Oss
Significance
The sailors were accused of desertion and unpaid service.
What happened
The sailors were accused of desertion and unpaid service. Their charts also marked the extinguished towers. Qirarden’s sanctuary law prevented immediate extradition without deciding the truth of either allegation. Empty berths in Fallowerness later commemorated crews who might still be alive under new names.

Participants
Iven Morn, Tavia Morn
Significance
The witness recalled soldiers carrying a child but described coats in a color inconsistent with surviving cloth.
What happened
The witness recalled soldiers carrying a child but described coats in a color inconsistent with surviving cloth. Court advocates used the error to dismiss the entire scene. Grove custodians argued that memory should be tested in parts. The hearing established the method later proposed for the Thorn testimony.

What happened
The listeners agreed on the request but not its speaker. One heard Avel’s childhood cadence, though she had never visited the chamber. Tavia barred cutting and invited outside witnesses, delaying a public verdict. The event is evidence of a memory, not proof of the historical interpretation each faction wants.

Significance
Gardeners noticed the ring before court inspectors and preserved slices in nursery cupboards.
What happened
Gardeners noticed the ring before court inspectors and preserved slices in nursery cupboards. The anomaly was dismissed as weather. Edda Vey’s recent survey found the same mark at distant rootwood destinations, suggesting one unrecorded working affected the whole network. The original event and its present interpretation remain distinct.

The world at a glance
Veyrath is one great cold landmass, with mild western woods and a narrow southern farming belt. The mountains intercept the eastern weather; the rivers distribute water and a more disputed resource, warmth. Two centuries ago, engineers saved harvests by moving heat through living roots and buried chambers. They called the arrangement the Concord of Eight Hearths. The eight realms now disagree over whose summer they have been spending.
Four ways into the story
Follow Vessa Rusk from the ice of Lake Aranea to the instrument benches of Garnetrun. Join Tarin Halvek beneath The Frost Skyline, where a road predates the glacier. Listen with Iven Morn at The Thorn Fortress, where a tree remembers a child the treaty does not mention. Or sail with Lin Sere to find a ship legally declared lost that still carries passengers.
Explore the connected world
The map names are the names used in the articles. Each realm has a capital and a ruling household; the elected offices of Athelarden, Aranestel and Qirarden are not hereditary even when their holders have influential relatives. The family tree records ten households across three generations. Dates run forward to 684, the present, and timeline pins mark the place of each event rather than a whole realm.
The magic systems are intentionally different in reach, cost and certainty. The Codex of Power compares them; individual spells show what a practitioner can actually attempt. The opening chapters follow the northern surveyor and the highland explorer as their evidence begins to converge.
What nobody knows yet
The warm jar, the buried road and the displaced memories point toward one mechanism, but the public lore does not settle what it is. This is a world for stories to happen in, not a solved puzzle whose characters merely repeat the answer.
