The person
Miren leads the winter supply train herself, carrying medicine in the warm space beneath her coat. She married Oren before he inherited the furnace obligations. She knows a fourth road would threaten the family income, yet has given Tarin her best mule for the survey. She values a path by who can return along it.
Place in the family
Married to Oren Halvek. Their children are Tarin Halvek, Hedra Halvek and Noll Halvek.
Hedra records the sound of furnace valves by making notches in a wooden flute.
Noll knows which pack animals refuse the eastern tunnel and which merely dislike its echo.
Tarin found shell-bearing paving under high ice and recognized the pattern from a pilot’s drawing of Highby.
The Halveks maintain the three highland passes and charge for the warmth that keeps them open.
Oren understands the pass machinery well enough to know it is failing and poorly enough to fear changing it.
A highland survey uncovered shell-bearing paving beneath the glacier.
