The Hollow Sound
A sheltered sea uncovering the architecture of an older bargain.
The sound is shallow enough that sailors traditionally navigate by the color of the water. Amber means sand, green means reed beds, and black means a channel deep enough for a grain ship. Newly exposed streets are changing those colors faster than pilots can redraw their charts.
Survey stakes disappear overnight. The Lantern Rays have abandoned their nursery channels, while Choirback Leviathans gather beyond the harbor mouth. These are not omens in agreement: the rays follow food, the leviathans follow a frequency, and the people watching them are telling three different stories.
Small estuary animals whose light reveals the health of the water.
Offshore grazers whose low calls resonate with the buried engine.
The night a city found streets where its harbor should have been.
A high coast whose stone roads outlast its rulers.
Families who treat a ferry route as a promise between neighbors.
An engineering record disguised as a book of harbor debts.
