Lantern Rays
Small estuary animals whose light reveals the health of the water.
Lantern rays feed at dusk, sweeping the underside of reed roots with soft fins. Their pale light comes from symbiotic organisms nourished by a varied diet. Clear, bright markings usually indicate a healthy nursery; a dark ray is more often hungry than sick.
Pilots follow feeding groups through familiar channels, but the animals are not navigational instruments. The falling tide has concentrated their food in dangerous pockets. Mothlight, an unusually old individual, keeps returning to a channel that now ends beneath the city.
