Mothlight
An old lantern ray with a scar shaped like an unfinished circle.
Saltstairs children recognize Mothlight by the missing edge of its left fin. Fishers have watched it return for at least nine seasons, sometimes accompanied by juveniles. Nobody owns it, though several households disagree about which scraps it prefers.
Its favored channel passes a warm-water leak from the Listening Engine. Following the animal can reveal the leak, but carrying it into the machine would kill it. A patient observer will learn more from the water and the reed roots than from trying to turn the ray into a magical guide.
Small estuary animals whose light reveals the health of the water.
A waterfront neighborhood measuring the tide one household at a time.
Offshore grazers whose low calls resonate with the buried engine.
Three shores share one sea, and none can afford to let it fall silent.
A city built around the harbor bell whose silence everyone fears.
Estuary towns that lend ships freely and remember debts precisely.
