Choirback Leviathans
Offshore grazers whose low calls resonate with the buried engine.
A choirback’s ridged back supports resonant chambers that carry its calls through cold water. Groups coordinate feeding by changing the interval between notes. Sailors once assumed the calls predicted storms; later records showed that both calls and storms followed the same seasonal currents.
This year the animals answer the Listening Engine instead. Its damaged vanes imitate a feeding signal. Releasing a full pulse could strand the group in the sound. The Third Sounding Crew needs to separate the engine’s mechanical warning from the animals’ reply before anyone restarts it.
