The last white line
An opening scene from a story of Lumeport.
The lowest step had been dry for three days when Iria noticed the bowl. Someone had left it beneath the old tide mark, filled with clean water and a single ribbon of weed. A child’s courtesy to a sea that had forgotten its way home.
She set her council papers on the next step and listened. From somewhere beneath the stone came a note too low to be a bell. Across the harbor, a carpenter stopped his hammer at the same instant. Neither looked toward the other.
Three shores share one sea, and none can afford to let it fall silent.
A city built around the harbor bell whose silence everyone fears.
Estuary towns that lend ships freely and remember debts precisely.
A high coast whose stone roads outlast its rulers.
A sheltered sea uncovering the architecture of an older bargain.
The hill of archives, public hearings, and careful silences.
